NEW YORK — It's not always that a presidential candidate with no chance is suddenly winning a surprising number of votes — it's usually the other way around. But this year it's just the opposite: Hillary Clinton has disappeared.
Voters are turning away from her and voting for Democrats' 2020 candidates, or for the first time, and many are being lured by the idea of a more socialist, European-style economy. Bernie Sanders, who once pledged to unite Democrats, is now dividing them.
In particular, young Democrats are rejecting Clinton and voting for Sanders, who believes the country needs more government regulation of the economy.
Clinton, who was the first woman to be nominated by a major party, has been limping along, averaging only 39% to 44% in polls of Democratic voters. That compares to Sanders' 77% to 20%. And even Republican Donald Trump, who has never won as a Democrat, has a higher net approval rating among Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters than Clinton.
“It’s the latest twist in the history of American politics,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York, a Democratic presidential contender. “People are looking for a change.”
Rangel said the Democrats are “trapped between the Democrats who have a vision of a return to America in the 1980s and a return to Europe with Bernie Sanders.”
He said the Democrats' establishment is upset about the fact Sanders is "winning (a) message fight.”
“He is correct. The Democrats must have a vision,” he said.
